Whether you have a problem with lack of forward, tension, or horse misbehavior or, just want to learn how your horse learns and what aid to use, this clinic is for you. Both advanced riders and trainers and novice riders say “Jody’s Equitation Science Clinic is the most valuable clinic they ever attended for learning how to improve their riding and their horse.”

Jody Hartstone (hartstoneequestrian.com/) teaches how to use the scientific knowledge of how horses learn to more effectively train horses and to improve riders’ skills and techniques in cueing horses to reliably achieve desired responses under saddle. It is Very Empowering and immediately effective for horses and riders of all levels, ages, and disciplines, including classical and western dressage, cross-county, hunter and show jumping and working equitation.

Horses learn new desired responses or change their problem behavior (mild or severe) to desired responses within the first few minutes of a session and continue to improve markedly throughout the session and subsequent sessions. They also become much more relaxed and reliable and retain the new behaviors when they go home. Riders take away WHAT to do, and WHY it works at the clinic, and they also take home the knowledge of exactly HOW the improvements have taken place through the application of the basic principles of animal learning that underlie all effective methods of horse training, including an understanding of the processes of operant conditioning, positive reinforcement, pressure-release and shaping behavior. Participants also take home the skills to keep improving their riding and their clinic horse’s behaviors and responsiveness and also the responsiveness and behavior of all other horses they train or ride, ever after.

Jody Hartstone (Diploma in Equitation Science) is as an international accredited Equitation Science Coach, extensively trained in the application of Equitation Science to horse riding and training by the world’s leading equine clinical ethologist, Dr. Andrew McLean (PhD in Equine Cognition and Learning, winner of the highest Australian science award, the Eureka Prize and long-time rider at the national and international level in multiple disciplines). Jody is also a long-time rider at the national and international level in multiple disciplines and is fun loving and kind and a great communicator and teacher. Her particular interests are in foundation training, retraining problem horses and dressage, but she happily serves all equines. At one of her recent clinics, she was both pleased and amused to have an opportunity to retrain a miniature donkey attendee brought to her by his loving owner! She lives in New Zealand, coaches world-wide and currently rides in Grand Prix and Working Equitation with her imported stallion Ali-baba Lusitano ( www.facebook.com/alibaba.lusitano.1 )

As a science, the systematic scientific investigation of how horses learn and behave in nature and their implications for sport horses' welfare and for improving both riders’ skills with horses and ridden horses behavior and responsiveness to riders' cues, is relatively new. Knowledge gained from these investigations is rapidly being disseminated to the equine community and advanced international trainers and riders, such as Mary Wanless (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekrgUCJCw-w ), are incorporating ES extensively into their training programs. It is also already changing practice within many equine disciplines. The North American Western Dressage Association’s show classes and judging criteria are structured to reflect the Equitation Science equine learning-based Training Scale and were developed in consultation with Dr. McLean ( www.horsetalk.co.nz/2016/01/09/western-dressage-andrew-mclean-treatment/ ). Similarly, The Pony Club of Australia is revising their syllabus to incorporate Equitation Science based-knowledge of how horses learn. For more information on this development, watch Dr. McLean’s interview about the Equitation Science Training Principles and the new Pony Club syllabus at last year’s International Society for Equitation Science Meeting in Rome: www.facebook.com/kandooequine/videos/vb.112278008791283/547280455723509/?type=2&theater
